What is a taxonomy?

A taxonomy is a classification system that is used to index and access information about a subject in a systematic, unambiguous way. In a human service context, a taxonomy is a classification system that allows you to index and access community resources based on the services they provide and the target populations they serve, if any. It provides a structure for this information and helps users of this web site find services that they need. When you use the "Topic Search" option you are using the taxonomy.

Who developed and publishes the taxonomy?

The taxonomy used in this web site has been developed by Information and Referral Federation of Los Angeles with input from the Alliance of Information and Referral Services and other contributors.

The information on the taxonomy definition page

The Definition section provides a complete definition of the taxonomy term that you selected from the previous page. The taxonomy code for this term is displayed for reference.

In many cases, you will see a See Also section with one or more taxonomy codes/terms listed beneath it. Clicking on one of those terms will display the definition for the selected term.

To return to the previous page, use the Back link above the taxonomy code/term.

Searching from the taxonomy definition page

In some circumstances (depending on how you got to the taxonomy definition page) you will have the opportunity to search for services based on the taxonomy code that's being displayed. If you see the Launch a Search panel to the left of the taxonomy definition panel, clicking the Search button will initiate a search for services that match this taxonomy term. You can filter the search geographically by selecting one of the geographic options before clicking the Search button.
